Service dog receives an honorary degree for assisting his owner throughout college

It’s graduation season once more, and many deserving students are receiving their diplomas and celebrating years of hard work. But among the graduates at Seton Hall University was an unexpected — and lovely — expression.

Justin, a service dog who belongs to graduating student Grace Mariani, stepped on stage to get an honorary diploma after assisting his owner through classes for the past four years.

Grace, from Mahwah, New Jersey, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree, according to the institution. Justin remained at his owner’s side throughout, accompanying her to all of her classes.

When Grace, who is in a wheelchair, got her degree on stage at Newark’s Prudential Center, Justin stole the show by accompanying her – and receiving his own honorary degree!

Seton Hall President Joseph E. Nyre delivered the rolled-up degree to the nice dog, who enthusiastically grabbed it in his teeth.

Grace aspires to teach elementary school and special education, according to Gray News/TMX, and will have her devoted dog Justin at her side the entire while.
